People searching for stump removal usually want one thing: the stump gone and the ground level again. Grinding gets you there without opening a crater in the lawn. Old stumps rot slowly. While they sit, they give carpenter ants and termites a place to nest. They also catch mower decks and trip people up. The grinder takes the stump down a few inches under the surface, usually four to six. That is deep enough to put soil over the top of the root plate. Grass covers it and a mower never finds it. We go deeper when you plan to plant something new in that spot or lay sod. Surface roots running out from the stump get ground down as well, since those are what catch a mower blade.
Grinding turns solid wood into a pile of chips mixed with dirt. The pile looks bigger than the stump did, because loose grindings take up more room. Raked back into the hole, that mound sinks over the next few months as the wood breaks down. Chips also pull nitrogen out of the soil while they rot. Grass seeded into them comes in thin and yellow. That is why we offer to take the grindings out instead of leaving them.
The first is grinding by itself. We take the stump below grade and rake the chips back into the hole. The pile sits a little high so it settles level. This is enough when the stump sits in a back corner or along a wood line. Little will grow in a bed of chips, and out of the way that rarely matters.
The second adds a mulch out. We scoop the grindings out of the hole and load them into the dump trailer. Clean topsoil comes in to fill the space. The fill gets mounded slightly, because fresh soil always settles. What you get is level dirt that matches the yard and is ready for seed whenever you put it down.
The third takes it all the way. We do the mulch out and the topsoil, smooth the surface with the rake, then seed and straw the spot. Fescue is the common lawn grass here, and fall is the best stretch to put it down. In summer we can leave the ground seed ready and you plant when the weather turns. The grindings ride out on our dump trailer. If brush piles or old junk are sitting around, our junk and debris removal clears them too.
Size comes first. A stump is measured across the top, and a wide one holds far more wood than it looks like. Count matters too, since several stumps in one yard cost less each than a single stump on its own trip. Hardwood grinds slower than pine. Age helps, because a stump that has sat a few years is softer than one cut last week.
Access moves the number as well. A stump behind a gate or up a slope takes more setup than one beside the driveway. One ringed by a patio or a fence corner takes longer than a stump in open lawn. Dirt and rock packed around the base wear the teeth down, so we clean the base off before starting. How you want the site left is the other half of the price.
Before grinding we file a free locate with Tennessee 811, which marks buried gas, power, and phone lines. State law gives the utilities three working days to get out there.
