Dade County covers 174 square miles and holds a little over 16,000 people spread across the valley. Trenton itself counted about 2,200 people in 2020, and the rest of the county is rural. The Lookout Creek watershed drains most of the county, and it runs roughly 71 percent forest. Another 12 percent is pasture and hay, so a lot of Dade County land is acreage.
The valley takes more than 50 inches of rain in a normal year, and it comes in bursts. Warm, wet summers push growth hard, and an edge you cleared last year closes back in fast. A pasture edge that got cut two summers back is usually a thicket by now. Privet and kudzu take fence rows and creek banks first, then push out into open field.
Lookout Creek runs north through the middle of the valley and crosses GA-136 right at Trenton. Heavy rain puts water over low roads and bottom fields, and it can close them for a while. Ground near the creek stays soft long after the rain quits, so timing matters on that work. Up on the mountain sides the soil is thin, with chert and sandstone close to the surface.
Forestry mulching is the first call on most Trenton acreage that has grown up past mowing. The mini skid steer carries a drum mulcher and takes brush and briar thickets down to ground level. It fits through a standard fence gate, so a grown-up back lot behind a house is reachable. Bottom land that has gone to brush comes back to open ground in a pass or two.
Open pasture and hay ground calls for a rotary cutter rather than the mulcher head. The rotary brush cutter handles brush clearing and bush hogging on fields left uncut for a season or more. Grown-up boundaries and old cattle fence lines get fence line clearing instead of a full mulch job. That opens the row so you can see the property line and build new fence on it.
Cut trees leave stumps in the yard and along the drive up to the house. Stump grinding takes them below grade so a mower rides over the spot without catching. We can pull the chips out, bring in topsoil, and finish the ground smooth for seed. Anything we cut that will not mulch down goes out on the dump trailer the same trip.
We come down from north of Chattanooga on I-24 west, then pick up I-59 south where it starts at Wildwood. That drops us into the valley at the north end of Dade County near Wildwood. US-11 and I-59 both run the length of the valley from there down past Rising Fawn. Most of the county sits within a few minutes of one of those two roads.
